A PDRN serum adds sodium DNA, short DNA fragments usually taken from salmon, to a hydrating base. Most of each formula is hydrating ingredients listed well above it. Evidence for PDRN itself on skin is early: one 28-day trial of a specially sized PDRN, plus a review of 7 small trials that were mostly injections and wounds.
By mid-afternoon your skin looks flat. Foundation sits on the surface instead of melting in, and your cheeks feel tight even though you moisturized this morning. That is the look a PDRN serum is sold against: dewy, plumped, glass skin in a bottle. Korean brands have built whole lines around it. Anua’s site files its range under Viral PDRN, and medicube pairs PDRN with peptides. Here is what is actually in these bottles and what the ingredient on the front can be expected to do.
What is PDRN in a serum?
PDRN, short for polydeoxyribonucleotide, is a mix of DNA fragments. On an ingredient list it usually appears as Sodium DNA. Anua states that the sodium DNA in its PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum “is derived from salmon dna”. Newer versions come from plants or bacteria; our Ingredient A–Z entry on PDRN covers the sources.
PDRN made its name as an injectable in skin clinics. Serums borrow the name, but putting DNA fragments on the skin’s surface is a very different situation from injecting them under it.
Does PDRN serum actually work?
The honest answer has two parts: the serum can make dull, dehydrated skin look better right away, but most of that comes from the rest of the formula, and the evidence for PDRN itself on skin is early.
Look at the Anua serum’s full list. It has 34 ingredients. Glycerin is 4th, a form of hyaluronic acid is 5th, niacinamide is 7th, and there are 8 forms of hyaluronic acid in total. Sodium DNA is 21st. In the US, ingredients present above 1% must be listed from most to least, so sodium DNA is unlikely to be a large share of this formula. The brand reports that, in its own testing, “Temporary deep skin hydration improved by 24.64% after 1 use”. A result after one use, labeled temporary, tells you how the whole serum performs on the day you apply it, not what PDRN does to skin over weeks.
That does not make the serum a bad buy. If your skin looks dull because it is dehydrated, a well-made hydrating serum is a reasonable fix, and our guide to whether hyaluronic acid can dry out skin explains how to get the most from one. It just means the word on the front is not doing most of the work you feel.
Can PDRN get into skin from a serum?
Some kinds may, and size is the problem. A widely cited dermatology rule holds that a compound generally needs to be under 500 daltons, a unit of molecular size, to pass through the skin’s outer layer. DNA fragments are far larger. (The same caveat applies to PDRN in hydrating mists, such as the one in TWS and BeginS by Jungsaemmool’s campaign.)
A 2026 study tackled this with a medium-length PDRN designed to get in. Imaging showed it spreading into the living layer of skin in lab models and in a small pilot test on people. In a 28-day double-blind, split-face trial, a 0.1% eye cream with this PDRN improved crow’s feet, skin thickness, density and under-eye bags about twice as much as a 0.1% retinol cream on the other side. Several of the authors work at Chinese biotechnology companies, and it is one specific, engineered PDRN. It does not show that every PDRN serum works the same way.
What does the wider research on PDRN show?
Mostly injections and wound care, and all of it small. A 2026 systematic review found 7 randomized trials with 183 people in total, covering skin rejuvenation, scars and wound healing. PDRN and related ingredients improved wrinkle measures, scar quality and healing, with the clearest benefit in wounds, and no serious side effects were reported. The reviewers were plain about the limits: “the evidence base remains limited by small sample sizes, heterogeneous treatment protocols, and variable outcome measures”.
So for a serum, think of PDRN as a promising extra, not the reason a product works.
Anua or medicube: which PDRN serum fits your skin?
They are built for different jobs.
Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum is a hydration serum first. Alongside the hyaluronic acids, it lists niacinamide, glutathione, hydrolyzed collagen and adenosine. The brand directs use morning and night before moisturizer, with SPF 30 or higher during the day. It suits skin that looks dull and feels tight.
medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum is a peptide serum with sodium DNA. It pairs PDRN with acetyl hexapeptide-8, copper tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 and niacinamide. It suits you better if early fine lines are the main concern. We cover what those peptides can and cannot do in our guide to copper peptide serums for fine lines.
If you are comparing other PDRN products, read the full list, not the front. Our guide to reading an ingredient list explains what the order can and cannot tell you.
How do you use a PDRN serum?
Apply it after cleansing and toner, then follow with moisturizer. Once or twice a day is fine. Wear sunscreen in the morning.
If your skin reacts easily, patch test first, and if you avoid animal-derived ingredients, check whether the brand’s PDRN comes from salmon or from a plant source.
Editor’s note
Of the products in this article, the one I have used is ACROPASS’s Reti-RN Microcone Patch, which pairs retinol with PDRN in a small patch.

Evidence: Evidence for PDRN applied to skin rests on one 28-day split-face trial of a medium-length PDRN and on lab models; the randomized trials pooled in a 2026 review are small and mostly involve injections or wounds.

What does PDRN serum do for your skin?
Most PDRN serums are hydrating serums with sodium DNA added. The plump, dewy feel right after use comes from the whole formula, which in the serums we checked is mostly hydrating ingredients listed above the PDRN. Whether the PDRN itself changes skin over weeks has only early evidence behind it.
Is PDRN really from salmon?
Often, yes. Anua states that the sodium DNA in its PDRN serum is derived from salmon DNA. Newer versions also come from plants or bacteria, so check the brand's description if you avoid animal-derived ingredients.
How long does PDRN serum take to work?
The hydration you feel is immediate. For any change in fine lines or firmness, the one controlled study of PDRN on skin measured results at 28 days, so give a serum at least four weeks.
Can you use PDRN with retinol?
We found no study of the combination. Some products put both in one formula, such as ACROPASS's Reti-RN Microcone Patch. Introduce one new product at a time so you can tell which one your skin is reacting to.
