Laneige eye patches, the brand's first, launched in September 2026 with BTS's Jin as the campaign face. Laneige says they combine dissolving spicules, plant-derived PDRN, caffeine and niacinamide. They suit morning puffiness and fluid-type shadows best; pigment and hollows change slowly, if at all, and need weeks of steady care.
Laneige eye patches arrived in September 2026 with a familiar face on the campaign: Jin of BTS, back as the brand’s global ambassador. It is Laneige’s first product in the eye patch category, and the timing is apt. If the face in the mirror at 7 a.m. looks puffier than the one you went to bed with, the launch lands on a real problem. Before deciding whether a cooling patch is worth it, it helps to know which kind of tired eyes you have.
What are the new Laneige eye patches?
They are the Bouncy & Firm Cooling Hydrogel Eye Patches, Laneige’s first eye patches, fronted by Jin. Jin was named Laneige’s first male global ambassador in 2024, and trade and beauty press, including NewBeauty, Hypebae and Cosmetics Business, report that this is his second campaign for the brand. Coverage dates the US launch to September 17 on Laneige’s own site and TikTok Shop, with Sephora and Amazon following in October.
Laneige describes the formula as melting spicules, plant-derived PDRN, caffeine and niacinamide. The ingredient list on its US product page also includes adenosine, sodium hyaluronate (a form of hyaluronic acid), a glycyrrhizate, peony extract and sodium DNA, the label name for PDRN. The brand reports that “100% showed improvement in appearance of undereye puffiness” in 32 people after 20 minutes, measured with instruments, and that 96% of the same group said their dark circles looked less noticeable after 2 weeks. Those are the brand’s own tests, without a published protocol or control group.
Why do my eyes look puffy in the morning?
Mostly because of fluid. The skin under the eyes is thin and slightly see-through, so fluid, blood vessels and the muscle beneath show more than anywhere else on the face. A 2016 review in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery notes that eyelid swelling is often worse after a salty meal or in the morning, after hours of lying flat.
Sleep shows up there too. In a Swedish study, 40 observers rated photos of 10 people after normal sleep and after 31 hours awake; the sleep-deprived faces had more swollen eyes, darker circles and more hanging eyelids. That is the version of tired a cooling patch is best placed to help.
Do eye patches help dark circles?
It depends on what is causing yours. A 2020 London review notes that “infraorbital dark circles are a significant esthetic concern” with few evidence-based guides, and sorts them into shadowing, vascular, pigment, post-inflammatory and constitutional types. A patch can do little for a shadow cast by a hollow under the eye, and pigment changes slowly. Fluid and visible blood vessels are where a short treatment has the best chance.
Most people have more than one cause at once. In a study of 65 people with dark circles in Taiwan, 78% had a mixed type, 14% mainly vascular, 5% mainly pigment and 3% mainly structural. The same study found that people with puffiness measured thicker tissue under the lower-eyelid skin than people without, and ultrasound showed that 14 people with under-eye bags had fat pads pushing forward. That last kind of bag is anatomy, not fluid, and no patch will flatten it. Because fluid swelling tends to be worst in the morning, bags that look the same at night as they do at breakfast can be a clue.
Our skincare routine for dark circles covers how to tell these types apart and what helps each one.
What do caffeine, niacinamide and PDRN do under the eyes?
Each targets a different part of the problem, and the evidence for each is thinner than eye-care marketing suggests. A 2024 review of eye-cream ingredients put it plainly: “The lack of clinical trials specifically targeting eye cream formulations and periorbital skin is a notable limitation.”
Caffeine is the puffiness ingredient. The 2016 review describes a randomized, placebo-controlled study in which a caffeine-based gel penetrated the lower eyelid skin and reduced swelling and pigmentation there. We found no trial of caffeine alone around the eyes, so treat it as a sensible ingredient for morning puffiness rather than a proven fix.
Niacinamide works on pigment, slowly. In a 12-week trial of 50 women aged 40 to 60, a 5% niacinamide product used on half the face “provided significant improvements versus control” in fine lines, pigment spots, texture and red blotchiness. That was whole-face skin over 3 months, not a 20-minute patch. Our niacinamide entry covers it in detail.
PDRN is the newest of the three. In a 2026 split-face trial from China, a 0.1% PDRN eye cream used for 28 days “achieved approximately two-fold greater improvements in periocular wrinkles” and eye-bag measures compared with 0.1% retinol. Several authors work for biotechnology companies, and the abstract does not give the number of participants. Our guide to PDRN serums explains what the ingredient is and where it comes from.
What are melting spicules, and do they work?
They are a delivery idea borrowed from microneedling. Spicules are microscopic needle-shaped particles, in research often taken from sea sponges, that open tiny channels in the skin’s surface so other ingredients can pass. In a lab study, spicules from the sponge Haliclona raised the passage of a test molecule through skin from 5.0 to 457.0 ng/cm² per hour. That was skin in a dish, not a face.
The closest human evidence comes from dissolving microneedle patches. In a 2018 Korean trial, 22 women used an adenosine microneedle patch around one eye and an adenosine cream around the other for 8 weeks. The patch worked as well as or better than the cream with a weekly dose 140 times lower, and no side effects were reported. One author worked for the patch maker.
Editor’s note
Eye patches are part of my own nights. I put retinal eye patches under my eyes before bed and take them off in the morning; they stay put even when I toss and turn, and they feel less stifling than a full sheet mask. After long workdays, when the skin under my eyes looks hollow and shadowed, retinal and bakuchiol are what seem to help me, slowly. I haven’t tried the Laneige patches, so I can’t tell you how they feel.
How should you use under-eye patches?
Match the patch to the problem and the timing:
- For morning puffiness, use a cooling patch for the time the label gives, then follow with moisturizer and sunscreen. Laneige measured its result at 20 minutes.
- For pigment or fine lines, steady use over weeks matters more than any single session; niacinamide, retinal or PDRN need time. Our guide to retinal versus retinol covers the retinoid option.
- With spicules or microneedles, apply to clean, dry, unbroken skin, keep them off the lash line, and skip them if you are using strong acids or retinoids on the same night.
- Patch test on the jaw or inner arm first if your eyes react easily.
A celebrity campaign sells the moment you peel the patches off. The useful question is quieter: is your under-eye problem fluid, pigment or shape? Patches are well suited to the first, play a slow supporting role in the second, and cannot change the third.

What is in the Laneige eye patches?
Laneige says the Bouncy & Firm Cooling Hydrogel Eye Patches combine melting spicules, plant-derived PDRN, caffeine and niacinamide. The ingredient list on its US product page also includes adenosine, sodium hyaluronate and sodium DNA, the label name for PDRN.
Is Jin the face of the Laneige eye patches?
Yes. Jin, who became Laneige's first male global ambassador in 2024, fronts the campaign for the eye patches, the brand's first product in that category, which launched in September 2026.
Do eye patches really work for puffiness?
They can help puffiness that comes from fluid, which is often worse in the morning. Laneige reports that all 32 people in its test showed less under-eye puffiness after 20 minutes. They do less for dark circles caused by pigment or by hollows, which need weeks of care or other approaches.
Are eye patches with microneedles or spicules safe?
Dissolving microneedle patches tested around the eyes caused no adverse effects in a 22-person Korean trial. Spicules are tiny needle-like particles that open the skin's surface briefly, so skip them on broken, irritated or very sensitive skin, and stop if the area stings.
